contributors to the ABC Reality Show Extreme Makeover Home
Edition.
In keeping with the show’s call to honor Everyday Heroes across
America, the Kadzis family in Tallahassee, Florida
was selected in February this year to be honored. Because of their extraordinary compassion George Kadzis, a prison dentist, and Barbara Kadzis, a lifelong teacher who herself was adopted, and their son Chris opened their hearts and home to five special-needs children adopted from orphanages in China. The Kadzis family faced major challenges in their cramped, hurricane-damaged home. It was especially difficult to navigate for daughter Melody, whom was born blind. The other adopted brothers and sisters also have significant physical challenges. Julia is deaf, Martin’s right arm and hand are deformed, and Phoenix and Celeste are now having their cleft palates repaired. Aileen lost her birth father to cancer and her birth mother fled after his death. And, to make things even worse, George Kadzis had brain cancer. The cast and crew of Extreme Makeover Home Edition, along with hundreds of local sponsors and contributors and about 2000 volunteers and workers, constructed the new home in just 7 days. The Kadzis' brand new 3,800 square foot fenced and gated home now has ample space for the family and 6 kids to live comfortably and safely. ABC, Myddelton Parker Builders and community supporters presented their donations to the family on February 27, 2009. On March 2, 2009, George Jacob Kadzis of Tallahassee, Florida, passed away. His wish that his family would have a house that was safe and secure was granted.
