Solar Tax Credit FAQ

To help you maximize your savings while going green, we’ve answered the most common questions regarding the federal solar tax credit for your Mighty Mule system.

1. What is the Federal Solar Tax Credit?

The Residential Clean Energy Credit is a federal incentive governed by Section 25D of the Internal Revenue Code. For qualifying solar-powered systems placed in service after December 31, 2021, and before January 1, 2026, homeowners were eligible to claim a 30% credit on the total cost of purchase and installation.

2. Which Mighty Mule products qualify?

Most solar-ready Mighty Mule gate openers are eligible when powered by a solar panel (such as our 10-Watt or 30-Watt kits) instead of a traditional AC transformer.

3. Does the credit cover the cost of the gate opener?

Yes, for eligible systems, the 30% credit generally applied to the entire system cost, including the gate operator, solar panels, battery, and related wiring. However, per Sec. 25D(g), the property must have been placed in service before January 1, 2026 to qualify for the 30% rate.

Taxpayer Responsibility: Taxpayer claiming the credit is responsible for determining if the expenditure relates appropriately to their residence and cannot rely solely on the manufacturer’s certification for that purpose.
